Busy week 3!

Hello everyone!

We had quite a busy week this week. Sunday, as an optional excursion, a group of us climbed up to the Christ statue. We took a short bus ride followed by an hour hike up the mountain! The view was beautiful. Luckily, there was an ice cream truck parked near the picnic area just before we reached the top!

Monday and Tuesday we had normal days of classes. We are working on the final program for the goodbye party for the host families. It is top secret information so I won't post anything here, but I can say that the students are working very hard and not complaining despite the huge amount of time we spend putting this together!

Wednesday, instead of having normal afternoon sports, we climbed up to Santa Maria del Naranco. It is a church that was finished being built in 848!! We toured it, took some pictures and then played some rounds of a game called Ninja. I'm having trouble putting links into the blog site today, so if you just google 'Santa Maria del Naranco' you will find more information on it!

Thursday night, another group of us went to see a modern Flamenco show here in Oviedo. It is not as easy to catch a Flamenco show in northern Spain as it is in southern Spain, so we were quite lucky to have this opportunity. Thursday night was the fiesta of San Juan which marks the beginning of summer. Lots of people gathered in the square in front of the cathedral to see a show before the bonfire was lit at midnight.

Friday, we were able to sleep in a bit. We arrived at school to pick up sack lunches and we headed to Gijon. Gijon is a city about 25 minutes north of Oviedo on the beach! We walked around the city, toured Roman baths, climbed up to Cima de Villa (which is a park with a great view of the ocean and city), went to a museum about life in Asturias, and finally, we made it to the beach. The students all took some time in the water which was cold! And there was a lot of wind. We all filled up on icecream and headed back to the train station. It was a beautiful day and Robert did an amazing job of planning everything!

The weekend forecast calls for 'heat'. In fact the newspaper weather headline is 'Asturias Prepares for Three Days of Heat', which is funny to us Hoosiers because it also reports that here in Oviedo, it will reach 27C (80F). Other cities will get a bit closer to 90. I am actually grateful it is not getting that hot because we don't have AC here in our dorm. I love that the hottest it gets for the most part is 80F!!!!

Attached are various pictures of Gijon, Sta Maria del Naranco, Fiesta de San Juan and the students.
